Veterans Honored at Middle School Assembly

by Sandy Booker

November 26, 2008

The CAM 8th grade students honored all Veterans on Tuesday, November 11 with an assembly at the middle school gym. This was a chance for the 8th graders to utilize the technology that they have been focusing on this year.

The commons area was decorated with a paper flag that had been created by the 8th grade class when they were in 6th grade art. This flag was used to create a backdrop for the Wall Of Honor in which pictures of veterans were displayed.

All 8th grade students were involved in some way with the assembly. After discussing how they would honor the veterans and those currently serving in the military, each student signed up for an area of interest that they would research. This allowed the students to use their laptops for their research. The students then sent their pictures via iChat to Carson Heiny, Hannah Ankenbauer and Kassidy Hansen. Carson and Hannah cropped the pictures and then sent the pictures through iChat to Kassidy who then pieced everything together to create an iMovie. The iMovie was set to music and contained pictures of local veterans or relatives of students, an interview with John Yarger who served in World War II as a pilot and various pictures of the different wars, monuments and memorials held for soldiers.

The program concluded with the attending veterans being asked to come forward when their military branch song was played. The middle school students and staff then had the opportunity to shake hands and thank each veteran for their service to our country.

I enjoyed working with the 8th graders on this project. They taught me quite a bit about technology and the cooperation they used to complete this was extraordinary. We would not have been able to complete this project without some outside help. Our technology experts for the project were Mr. Casey, Mrs. Venteicher and Miss Lantzky. Miss Rudolph also helped with the military branch songs. Thank you for the expertise that you provided.

If you could not make the assembly and would like to view the iMovie, we are hoping that sometime in the future, the iMovie that was created will be available on the school website.
